In order to keep the secret quite out of the minds of the audience, the magician asks each person who chose a card to think strongly of the card and look into his eyes. He tells them: “Remember the eyes are a mirror of the mind.” Of course, that is a mis-quotation but no magician ever would let such an atom-sized detail mar his regard for good patter for a good trick.
